Brighton Ski Area Utah

Posted on January 18, 2011.
Best Mt Hood area ski resort?

I moved from Salt Lake to Portland. Keep in mind that Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude, Canyons, Park City Mtn, and Deer Valley are all within 40 minutes from my door. Who use Mt Hood offers the closest ski Utah?

As Jim said, there's nothing here in Oregon that is convenient for skiing you're used to Utah. However, there are lots of great cross-country and backcountry skiing in places like Crater Lake.

Basically, Mt Hood itself is a decent ski area but did not land vertically, or you're used to. Assuming you are a very good skier, you'll probably get bored in a fairly short order. On the positive side, however, Mt Hood is open for much of the summer, so you can go out and ski in the middle of July. This is not something you can get very often in Utah.

Also on the positive side, Portland is actually quite close to the Tahoe area. Its about 9 hours driving, 1 hour flight or a flight from PDX to Reno. Ticket prices are not bad. Plan ahead a little and you can get round trip on Southwest in the order of $ 150 to $ 200. That's about what you'd pay for gas if you have an SUV.

None. Utah snow is very dry compared to Mt Hood. Coastal storms reach the groove and have lots of moisture. The snow depth is always great. To try to land Meadows, Timberline for history. Since all areas are so close, spend the extra money and each ski area, then you can decide for yourself. Waxing your skis.
