Surfer_soul travel blog entry:
"Driving through the scenic Catlins coast, was not so spectacular that you would expect, composed of farms, fields and forests, the best thing about this is by far the wildlife, because it was like a big NZ part of my scene already, we stopped for some walks in the woods to see waterfalls and Waitaki minor place called, I think, maybe the wrong name, Down groaned, why are we here? I said lets just look like I had seen a sign of wildlife. Anyway we left the van and headed to the beach to see a group of lions Wed lounging in the sand! they a huge creature, but surprisingly well camoflaged, you could almost walk on if you were not careful! take some pictures of these, half covered with sand as the movement we are out of them was raised the casual flipper! enougn Then we were fortunate to see who comes out of the sea, and logging to the beach, I have a movie of this situation and a very beautiful image! It was really close and not afraid or aggressive towards us, but we were not on his appreiate terority you might say.
After that we head back along the gravel road to find a car just went into a ditch and later annother van with its windshield smashed in smitherines! It Brough back bad memorys of the time he reached the back window of the van are! People go too fast and send it flying gravel when they turn corners. Fortunately no doubt and because of my skillful driving we arrived at the Bay of trinkets and a normal road without incident.
Here I stopped to watch the beach and was happy to find a surf pumping! We do not have much time but I managed to get a sesion fast anyway, the winds were so strong that the waves at sea if the catch was difficult and I was a little awkward time ive been locked, I still had 2 good.
Later that day we made our way Owaki, most small towns along the coast and the only place with facilltys for camping.
We tryed our turn to pay for any one person, instead of $ 14 per person to save money, but when I pulled into the owner had seen low allreay sitting in front, so I paid for two instead, (which we split 3 ways)
It was pretty scetchy that the campsite was very quiet and the owner was a guy from Lancashire, some what like a character in the league of gentlemen! Later that night we were sitting around the pool game room and he comes with his nose and sqaushy funny haircut and looking back and forth between the three of us and said: "Is it me, or our only two of you are supposed to stay here? I said thats right, this other guy is housed at the backpackers in town, we met here because we each new Queenstown fromn others. Fortunately, he seemed quite convinced by that, we gave a last look bulging eyes, then turns off ****. It was fortunate that both were paid instead of one even! We did that for nearly two weeks camping in Queenstown. The reason is a scam to pay 3 times for something that just might use and where you broke!
Anyway, we drove back to Papatowai the next day, but the surf looked big and scary to heavy chop with ofshores weird, and nobody, so I gave it a miss and we drove about Kaka, a coastal city qauint annother with not much to do, we did however lead to nuggets piont where we could see the yellow eyes.
