History of Portsmouth - England, Her Famous People

The history of Portsmouth is intimately linked to the history of Portsmouth Her Majesty's naval base, which spans nearly two thousand years. The time when the Romans recognized its strategic importance and builds the fort "Portus Adurni", and now home to 80% of the surface fleet of the Royal Navy.

Like so many events and famous people were born, lived and worked in Portsmouth over the centuries, I thought it would be a good idea to tell his story and some of the history of famous people.

Ms. Duncan last women to be tried as a witch - Britain 1944

The last person to be tried as a witch was Ms. Duncan, a Scot who has traveled the country holding meetings, was one of the most famous in Britain, numbering deemed Winston Churchill and George VI among her clients when she was arrested in January 1944 by two naval officers at a meeting in Portsmouth. The military authorities, secretly preparing for the D-Day landings and then into a higher state of paranoia, were alarmed by reports that she had disclosed - allegedly through contacts with the spirit world - the sinking of two British warships long before they become public. The disclosure came the more serious when she told the parents of a missing sailor that his ship, HMS Barham, had sunk. It is true, but the news of the tragedy had been suppressed to preserve morale.

Desperate to silence the apparent leak state secrets, authorities Duncan of conspiracy, fraud and witchcraft under a law dating from 1735 - the first load time in more than a century . During the trial, only the "Black Magic" allegations stuck, and she was jailed for nine months in prison for women in Holloway, north London. Churchill, then prime minister, visited him in prison and has denounced his conviction that "stupidity". In 1951, he repealed the 200-years, but his conviction was.

Wymering Manor - The Most Haunted House in England.

As I am originally from Portsmouth, England, I thought it might be interesting to write about the oldest house in Portsmouth in date from 1042 AD, which is also the most haunted house in England called Wymering Manor House.

Although most of the current structure dates from the 16th century, the manor goes back much further. Records indicate the first owner of Wymering Manor was King Edward the Confessor in 1042, then after the battle of Hastings he fell into the hands of King William the Conqueror to 1084. The house was renovated and changed constantly over the centuries, but it was remarkably preserved material dating from the medieval and even ancient Rome.

Having changed hands several times over the past hundred years, the property was finally adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, and then sold for a little time for a private development in a hotel. When development is falling far, the property reverts to the council, which was again auctioned.

Once a country mansion, the structure is now surrounded by modern houses. And when he was rescued from demolition and used as a hostel, many areas of the building was "modernized" and an unhappy, feel institutional.

With this rich history, it is not surprising perhaps that should be haunted Wymering Manor.

Here are some of the ghosts that haunt Wymering Manor:

The lady in the purple dress. When Mr. Thomas Parr lived at Wymering Manor, he awoke one night to the sight of an apparition standing at the foot of his bed. He was her cousin, who died in 1917. Dressed in full length purple, the spirit spoke to him in a friendly and down-to-fact, saying its recent religious experiences, and other family members died. Suddenly, the ghost said, "Well, my dear Tommy, I have to.
