"Holy Wars ... The Punishment Due" (sample (help aec info)) is the opening track of rust heavy metal band Megadeth album of 1990 in peace.
The song has an unusual structure, the displacement at 2:26 after an acoustic bridge by Marty Friedman to another, slower and heavier of the article entitled "The Punishment Due". The whole song is usually referred to simply as "holy wars .
The lyrical theme of "Holy Wars" examines the conflict in Northern Ireland. In an interview with British magazine Guitarist, Mustaine says he was inspired to write the song in Northern Ireland, when he discovered smuggling T-shirts were on sale and Megadeth was dissuaded from taking steps to make them removed on the basis that they were part of fundraising for the "cause" (ie the Provisional Irish Republican Army). Mustaine said recently at a concert at Rock City (Nottingham, UK 18/02/2008) that this is where he wrote Holy Wars, having traveled there from Ireland in bullet proof bus. "The Punishment Due" is based on the popular Marvel comic, The Punisher.
"It's about how war is imminent and it does not really matter what country he is in. .. Gaddafi [Libya] ... Khomeini [in Iran] ... It's great how these guys have weird names, these idiots who drive different countries. But it shows you ... The War of the war, no matter where you stand. "(Mustaine)
"I had to fight to save the second solo album Electric in this piece as I wanted! The first decision I made as I was just warming up is the one producer Mike Clink loved. When he heard, he said, "That's fine. Good job. And I was like, 'Whooooaaaa! Wait a minute. I have not even given my guitar yet. Let me play a solo real here. It Mustaine and both thought it was beautiful and we should move on, so we left him there. As the days and again, knowing that the solo was over there was really bugged. So, I continued to wear it to the guys that I wanted to do it again. Everyone loved the solo that was there, so I had no allies! Eventually I wore ribbed Mike Clink and me had come back and re-cut the solo, and the new solo is the one who made the record. "(Friedman, 2002)
The song is the last song played during the encore performances of all recent Megadeth, though often in the middle, they splice "Mechanix" between the "holy wars" and "The Punishment Due".
