Late Deals Devon

Posted on February 9, 2011.
So you want to be a courier?

I had thought about becoming a courier for a while, then at the end of 2009 came the postal strike, I have the opportunity. They say that the recession is a good time to start a business, after all how hard can it be? I used to deliver pizzas around Exeter in the late 80's Honda on C90S and melodies, but a broken leg put an end to this very quickly. To be honest, a broken leg was not a bad result considering I used to ride these things! After 15 years off bikes I lost time with car accidents and a death-defying marriage to defy death I now have a Honda Pan European ST1100 ideal for long journeys to the four corners of the United Kingdom From my base in the Devon countryside.

My main role in life is like a single parent caring for my disabled son, but while he was at school, I was left to fill the days, which seemed to do so by riding somewhere random, then riding back before returning home. Would not it be great if I could ride in different places, but someone else to pay for gasoline, tires and maintenance? I live near Exeter and there are not many motorcycle courier companies around me so I had a niche market. Again, you might wonder why there are not many motorcycle haul around. I was not looking for a job 24 / 7 that I can work during the school year and not really the weekend if the absence of any request I have not turned off.

Last October, I spent about three hours on the 'phone for basic necessities, the motorcycle insurance that covered me from being a courier and goods in transit (GIT) insurance. Just the bike insurance was a headache, some companies quoted me over £ 1,500 per year TPF & T and some would not even consider giving me such an assurance. Finally I went with Swinton Bike seemed to offer me a good deal and now I'm tired of talking to people in call centers. I googled GiT insurance company and found a very useful called Coversure Rubery in Birmingham. Mark got their man set a policy that gave me £ 10,000 of coverage. Goods in transit insurance covers everything that I, as a courier, I'm shipping. So if I took a £ 10,000 laptop to someone at the airport of Heathrow and it fell out of my top box on the M4 and was crushed, I am covered.

So without proper planning and my usual jump with both feet and make it up as I go along I was now a horse stance, albeit with zero experience, Devon Motorcycle Couriers was born. Good start, but how people find me? Where people are looking for a courier? In this day and everyone uses Google age. If you want something in a hurry using Google. That's what I guess I'm lucky and seemed to be right. First thing to do, find as many business directories free online as you can and get registered with them. It is a slow and laborious, but you'll be glad later. Do not be surprised if you receive many calls during the next few days from directories asking if you want to upgrade for a price. You soon learn to say no and hang up. So what? Sit and wait? No, keep pushing! There will always be somewhere you can list your business that you had not thought of before.

Within three days of starting the business I had a job of a financial services company based hundreds of miles who wanted me to print some forms they sent me, tower in Plymouth, have them sign and post them on the back. Yes, they called me a) because of the postal strike and b) because they found my number in one of free directories I put on standby. Now I found embarrassing to go somewhere a.
