The resort's most famous in the French Alps is Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. Chamonix is both the oldest and largest French resort of winter sports. Site of the first Winter Olympics held in 1924, Chamonix offers cars in the world highest cable car (12,000 feet). From the summit the view of Mont Blanc, at 15,700 feet, is magnificent.

Visitors can do more Chamonix ski, though. There are lectures, science fairs, fishing and hunting, music and folk festivals, and an alpine museum. A golf course 18-hole golfers delight, and three movie theaters provide enough entertainment viewing, even for the dedicated moviegoer. Five spots dance or nightclubs, will entertain the under-30, while the adventurer health conscious can indulge in day of sports such as cycling, climbing, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, tennis and ice skating.

Chamonix is part of the Ski Pass Mont Blanc region, and provides access to over 140 individual tracks or dedicated ski runs covering over 94 miles. A dedicated package will provide access not only to Chamonix, but Argentia¨re, Combloux, Cordon, Le Tour, Les Contamines, Les Houches, Mega¨ve, Passy Plaine Joux and St Gervais Mont-Blanc as well. Much of the dedicated tracks are above 8,200 feet, so year-round skiing is guaranteed. Chamonix also 54 snow cannons to provide adequate basic and good soil, and 49 lifts capable of transporting over 52,000 passengers per hour.

Megeve is built around a medieval core, but has the kinds of amenities for all travelers and skiers will appreciate. Expensive and elegant Mega¨ve was built in the 1920s as an alternative remedy in St. Moritz, and continued to improve and attract discerning travelers since. Fortunately, you do not need star status to enjoy a luxury hotel or cottage, you'll need a large collection of vacation; Megeve is not cheap.

Meribel used to be an intermediate site, but the opening of the Mont Vallon and the top of the valley have made a major destination for extreme skiers as well. Morzine has easy highway access and is ideal for beginners. Its gently sloping, wooded slopes and a pleasant atmosphere are not in danger for those unfamiliar with French customs, cuisine, or skiing.
